The R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of the Year Award: Honoring a book on the topic of human resource development research and practice in Vietnam

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hien expressed her gratitude for the honor of receiving the “R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of The Year” award from the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) in the United States for her book, “Human Resource Development in Vietnam: Research and Practice.” She said, “This award is a recognition of the collaborative efforts and contributions of the authors in researching and practicing human resource development in a newly emerging country like Vietnam. It is also a testament to the growing importance of human resource development in Vietnam in the regional and international research community.”

The publication Human Resource Development in Vietnam: Research and Practice belongs to the book series “Palgrave MacMillan Asian Business Series”, published by Springer Nature in 2021, in the Scopus database. This is a book that is compiled in the form of an edited volume, meaning that each chapter of the book is written by different authors. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hien of the Institute of Business Administration, VNU University of Economics and Business is the editor-in-chief of the book.

The book has the contributions of the editorial board members including Dr. Phuong To Tam and Dr. Van Thi Minh Huyen of the Foreign Trade University, Dr. Gary McLean of Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand, Dr. Mark Ashwill of Capstone Vietnam Company, and 31 collaborators. The cooperative efforts of domestic authors with international scholars and human resource development practitioners have contributed to making the voice of human resource development in Vietnam heard on the world's human resource development research and practice forum.

The “R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of The Year” award is an annual award of the Academy of Human Resource Development, initiated in 1997. The special thing is that for the first time, an editorial board not from the United States or the United Kingdom has been awarded this award.

The ceremony took place at 22:00 on April 18, 2022, Vietnam time, in the form of an online event

Human Resource Development in Vietnam: Research and Practice is a comprehensive volume edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hien. It is divided into four parts and 13 chapters, covering a wide range of topics from an overview of human resource development in Vietnam to human resource development in education, human resource development in organizations, and the future of human resource development in Vietnam.

- Part I examines the historical and cultural context of Vietnam that has influenced human resource development. Based on this foundation, the authors assess human resource development in Vietnam, analyze national policies, and explore labor market perspectives in the context of ASEAN integration.

- Part II emphasizes the role of schools in promoting the startup and innovation ecosystem to prepare business school graduates with the ability to solve human resource development problems in Vietnam.

- Part III delves into the field of human resource development in organizations, including topics such as corporate training and development activities, female leadership in the boards of directors of listed companies, management culture and innovation in management, the role of human resources in building sustainable Vietnamese SMEs, and knowledge management.

- Part IV concludes with a summary of human resource development issues, as well as recommendations and a vision for the future of human resource development in Vietnam.

The key highlight of the book is that the issues are considered from the perspective of Vietnamese scholars who are trying to understand the different aspects of human resource development in the specific context of Vietnam. In recent decades, human resource development in Vietnam has been shaped by a number of influences from the country's historical, political, economic, and cultural context. These include cultural exchanges from China and the West, the impact of Vietnam's socio-economic development strategies, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and Vietnam's integration into human resource development in Southeast Asia. From the insider perspective, the scholars highlight the importance of human resource development, considering it in the context of national policies, educational and training activities, and organizational practices.

In particular, the authors all offer suggestions for further research on human resource development, helping domestic and international scholars identify research areas that are needed in Vietnam and other developing countries. The proposals are also very practical for students who want to implement human resource development practices in Vietnam and in similar contexts.

Despite being published in English, with most of the authors' native languages being Vietnamese, the book is written in an engaging style. This was a real challenge that required great effort from the team of authors.
