On 14th April 2009, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Education and Training, Ms. Karen Sewel and the New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam,- Dr. James Kember visited the VNU. Attending the meeting, were Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan, President, and other representatives from the University of Economics and Business, from the School of Graduate Studies, and the International Relations Department, VNU.
Representing the University of Economics and Business, VNU were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Vice Rector, and Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet, Head of the Research, Cooperation and Development Department.
After Prof. Mai Trong Nhuan had given a general introduction about the VNU, Mrs. Karen Sewell reported on New Zealand’s education system as well fields of collaboration in culture, education and training between the two countries.
On behalf of the University of Economics and Business, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Son reported on the present state of cooperation between the University of Economics and Business and Massey University, New Zealand. The PhD cooperation program has been in operation since 2008 and, so far, it has been very successful. In accordance to Module 2 + 2 Cooperative Training, for the first 2 years the students study at the University of Economics and Business, and for the last 2 years they study at Massey University. The Business Bachelor training program specializing in Economics and Finance, will take place in 2009. In this program, students will have the opportunity to learn entirely in English. Three eighths of specialized subjects are to be taught by the Massey University faculty and students will be tutored in English in order to satisfy all English requirements to continue the next 2 years in New Zealand.
At the end of the course, the students will be awarded exactly the same diploma as any other students who study and complete the entire program in New Zealand.
The Deputy Minister and the Ambassador warmly expressed their appreciation for this cooperation and promised further opportunities for cooperation in the future.
In addition, the ambassador accepted the invitation to join the Information Day at the University of Economics and Business on the 2 plus 2 module on Economics and Finance cooperative program between the University of Economics and Business and Massey University. Mr. James Kember thought it would be a good opportunity for him to introduce to Vietnamese students and their parents t his country and people of New Zealand.
Developing cooperation between the University of Economics and Business and Massey University will not only improve the relation between universities in Vietnam and New Zealand, but it will also promote the universities’prestige and position in the academic community worldwide.
