VNU-UEB student won the second prize of the Olympic Econometrics and Applications competition: “Talent is important, the more important is passion and perseverance”

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, a student at the Faculty of Finance and Banking - VNU - UEB, and a member of the winning team at the 7th "Econometrics and Applied Olympiad" competition in 2022, received the second-place award. This is not only an honor for myself, my family, but also the pride of friends and lecturers of the whole institution.

Charming of the international competition

With a propensity for research, Phuong Thao is not a stranger to scientific research competitions held by VNU-UEb, but she wouldn’t attempt to register for the Econometric Olympiad without support from her instructor. This competition encompasses numerous economic and social spheres. With the topic, "Does macro-prudential policy foster or constraint economic growth?" (Does macro-prudential policy foster or restrict economic growth?), Phuong Thao and her partner –Nguyen Ngoc Tram from UEB-Troy, K18A intake defeated 123 projects of students from 23 universities around the country to win second place.

Discovery of your strengths

According to Phuong Thao, the study should focus on examining the macro-prudential policy framework data. Consequently, the research team examined how to analyze macro-prudential policy for economic development efficiently. Phuong Thao stated, "With the mindset of going to the tournament to learn from the moment of registration, it was inconceivable for me to win second place. I was on the edge of tears and dumbfounded when the results were revealed because I was so shocked. It may be considered that I still do not believe I am worthy of receiving this great prize."

Phuong Thao also stated that both her knowledge and experience benefited greatly from the Olympic competition. Regarding inter-disciplinary knowledge: Phuong Thao almost mastered key macroeconomics concepts and the bank's strategy for penetrating new markets through the coverage of this field. Regarding market research skills and data analysis: facing a market that Phuong Thao has never examined in order to devise appropriate strategies for the topic at hand.

Continuity of the path to victory

Phuong Thao has accomplished extraordinary feats by co-authoring two scholarly articles: The article " Market Reaction to the Announcements of Free Trade Agreements: Evidence from Vietnam " was published in the Journal of Forum for Social Economics by Taylor and Francis Publishing, under the ISI (ESCI) and SCOPUS catalogues; and the article " The impact of interest rate policy on credit union lending during a crisis period " was published in Finance Research Letters under the SSCI category.

In the academic year 2021-2022, she won the Third Prize for Student Scientific Research, demonstrating her sustained aptitude. Phuong Thao's technique of learning entails visualizing and mapping all information in order to identify the connections between different bits of knowledge. Because, according to Phuong Thao, economics disciplines contain numerous areas that need to be connected so that students may swiftly provide solutions to problem-related concerns.

As an experienced student in the field of research, Phuong Thao advises other students on their quest for knowledge to "Be strong, be brave, and be patient."
