20 percent of good lecturers will bring about 80 percent of efficiency

This is the principle Pareto 80/20 that the UEB’s Rector gave to leaders of department in VNU on 15th and 16th November 2018.

In two days, Assoc.Prof.Dr Nguyen Truc Le gave lectures to learners in four classes with the same subject: “University management skills for leaders of departments” with the topic of system administration. Attending the course, there were lecturers from all member universities of VNU, including 15 lecturers from the UEB.

With the presentation about Pareto 80/20 principles, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Truc Le also emphasized that a good system administrators need to know how to prioritize work and focus resources on selected jobs. As a result, only up to 20% of the most important tasks would bring 80% effectiveness. Hence, leaders of departments need to determine the capacity of each lecturers to select 20% of faculty members and create the most favorable condition for them to deal with 80% of work.

 

In addition, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Truc Le also provided mind tools and methods of systems management. He identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenge in the condition of the department.

 

UEB’s Rector said that leaders of the departments must have regulations on supervision and evaluation, implementing the set of KPIs for all levels to measure the quality and quantity of work, as a basis for salary and emulation. If the evaluation was only implemented at the faculty or department level, it would lead to unfair evaluation, fail to find solutions to promote work and improve teaching effectiveness.

 

The learners are eager to discuss together about the problems existed, especially the problem of applying the new methods in teaching. Which management form is simple and appropriate? Answering the question, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Truc Le introduced the practical application to encourage teachers to innovate teaching methods.

 

After the class, Mr. Pham Vuong (Head of Administration Department, Center for Quality Control Education) said that, what he learned from the class was valuable. He hoped that there will be more lessons with examples and technique to measure the quality and quantity of work to apply in his jobs.
