The workshop on economics in brain drain

On 2nd November 2012, Vietnam Center for Economics and Policy Research has successfully organized the workshop “The Economics of Brain Drain: Theory, Model and Policy Implications for Vietnam”.

This workshop was one of the activities in the major research project granted by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, conducted by the research team of VEPR since Nov, 2011.
Many experts interested in the subject of brain drain attended the workshop, including Dr. Do Minh Cuong, Department of Training and Cultivating State Civil Servant and Officials - Party Central Organization Committee; Dr. Nguyen Binh Giang, Vice Director, Institute of World Economics and Politics; Dr. To Thi Anh Duong, Vietnam Institute of Economics - Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences; Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Vietnam Institute of Economics - Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences; Dr. Phan Van Nhan, Vice Director of the Research Center for Education Management - Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences; Dr. To Minh Thu, Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam; MSc. Dang Ngoc Tram, Department of World Economy, National Center for Socio-Economic Information and Forecast, etc.
Four presentations have been presented and discussed at the workshop:

1. "Trends and characteristics of the flows of migration and brain drain in the world" by Hoang Xuan Diem, Central Institute for Economic Management, Ministry of Planning and Investment.
2. "The modern theoretical views of brain drain: Latest achievements" by Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research.
3. "Experiences from brain drain and circulation in China: Practices and Policies" by Dr. Pham Sy Thanh, Director of VCES - VEPR.
4. "The current flow of Vietnamese migrant workers: the role of remittances in poverty reduction" by Hoang Thi Chinh Thon, Faculty of Economics, National Economics University, Hanoi.

All four papers have received much attention, straighforward questions and recommendations from experts and researchers in order to contribute to the modern theory of brain drain, update new theoretical achievements, implications and policy instruments in the subject of brain drain management for researchers, managers and policy-makers, propose ideas and policies for Vietnam. The workshop has been highly appreciated due to high-quality professional knowledge.
