Green Finance: International experience and lessons for Vietnam

On 11/10/2018, the University of Economics and Business - VNU in collaboration with the Ambassador of Sweden Embassy in Hanoi held an international conference on the subject at Hall 801.

Conference was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector of University of Economics and Business, Ms. Victoria Rhodin Sandström - Embassy of Sweden, Prof. Gustav Martinsson, Royal Swedish Academy of Technology and experts from the Embassy of Sweden , UNDP in Vietnam, representatives of the German Development Cooperation in Vietnam (GIZ), Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) and lecturers, researchers and students from University of Economics and Business.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu speaks at the conference
Opening conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu emphasized: As a member of VNU - the largest research-oriented university in Vietnam, UEB always seeks opportunities for cooperation with universities and institutes around the world to develop research capacity as well as increase learning opportunities for students / lecturers. UEB wishes to become the cradle of knowledge, the destination of wisdom, especially in the fields of economics, finance and banking. The Green Finance Conference is an opportunity for UEB to welcome lecturers, scholars and guests from countries around the world to share their researches and experiences in implementing the green finance network, through it give useful lessons for Vietnam in the current context.
 

Prof. Gustav Martinsson, Royal Swedish Academy of Technology

In the main part of the conference, speakers presented green research and experience in the world in this field, combining research, Discussion between speakers and guests, delegates.

Opening conference was delivered by Prof. Gustav Martinsson fromRoyal Swedish Academy of Technology on subject:“Finance and Climate Change Mitigation: Evidence from Sweden”. Research has shown that in order to build good policies, there should be collaboration between researchers, government and international organizations. At the same time, Vietnam needs to develop a sound policy framework to increase the development of green finance.

 

Mr. Jiri Dusik presents the study
In the next section, United Nations Development Program Vietnam (UNDP) - Mr. Jiri Dusik presented the Study on Opportunities for Unlocking Green Finance in Vietnam. The paper shows the impacts on the environment in terms of economic development in Vietnam and the results of research on the potential impact on the environment in the 4.0 technology era.
 
Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy - Dean of Faculty of Accounting and Auditing, University of Economics and Business
The final research was presented by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy - Dean of Faculty of Accounting and Auditing, UEB and Ms. Tran Binh Minh - Central Institute for Economic Management with subject: Initial findings on Green finance: Legal framework and the condition for running effective green finance market.The study provides recommendations for proposing the basics for developing green finance in the context of Vietnam's lack of legal framework for green investment and the support of green finance intermediaries.
 

Ms. Victoria Rhodin Sandström - Embassy of Sweden

After presentation of speakers, guests and delegates exchanged, discussed directly the issue of green finance as well as the development of policies and legal framework in Vietnam in this regard. The guests appreciated the results of the study which presented at the conference and raised many ideas about how to apply this practical experience in Vietnam.

Conference is part of the effort of UEB to create a research network between international experts with a strong interest in Vietnam and other national policy makers and experts as well as interested academics, aiming to develop UEB into a research-oriented university with stature in the region and in the world.
