Launching conference of Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2017

On 16th June 2017, at the Pan Pacific Hotel, the Institute of Economic and Policy Research (VEPR) under VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB) held the conference to launch the Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2017 - “Accelerating Reforms Towards a Facilitating State”.

The conference attracted attention from leaders in state agencies, domestic and foreign research institutions, businesses and universities in economics. Attending the conference, there were Mr. Truong Dinh Tuyen - Senior economist, Dr. Nguyen Tri Dung - Former Deputy Chairman of Office of National Assembly, Dr. Le Hong Nhat - University of Economics - Law, VNU HCMC. From the UEB, there were Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Truc Le - Vice Rector in charge, Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector together with representatives of associations, enterprises, banks and media.

The opening speech was delivered by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Truc Le - Vice Rector in charge of the UEB. After that, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh presented the main contents of Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2017.

Vietnam Annual Economic Report 2017 includes 8 chapters and annexes:

  • Chapter 1: World economic overview 2016
  • Chapter 2: Vietnam economic overview 2016
  • Chapter 3: Institutional reform for building a facilitating state in Vietnam
  • Chapter 4: Protection of property rights of individuals and organizations for natural resources in agricultural production
  • Chapter 5: International economic integration and needs of institutional reform: The case of investment policy in Vietnam - EU FTA
  • Chapter 6: The rise of the middle class and policy shift in Vietnam
  • Chapter 7: Role of non-profit organizations in improving institutional quality in localities
  • Chapter 8: Vietnam's economic outlook 2017 and policy recommendations.

 

The peer group is reviewing and giving comments on the report

The report provides two scenarios for Vietnam's microeconomic outlook for 2017. In the scenario of 6.7% growth, inflation at 3.2% can be achieved with high determination of the government but will pose a problem in sustainable growth. As for the natural economic growth scenario, economic growth was about 6.37% and the annual inflation rate fell to the lowest level of 2.35%. The report addresses a number of barriers, and outlined the solutions relevant to the provisions in the draft law on forest protection and development, the law on fisheries. It also gives a legal review, mentioning shortcomings in Vietnam's legal and policy system compared to those of EVFTA.

 

 
Participants ask questions to the authors of the report

After the presentation of the report was time for comments and questions from economists and participants. There were various comments and questions for the contents of the report. Those were received and answered directly by the author group. Currently, Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2017 is being finalized and expected to be officially released in September 2017.

Vietnam Annual Economic Report was first published in 2009. The is a series of reports published annually to review major economic issues of a year, while discussing the economic outlook for next year and propose relevant policies. The report has been a useful reference for managers, policy makers, researchers as well as for all who are interested in the issues of macroeconomics in Vietnam.

 

The Vietnam Economic Annual Report was published for the first time in 2009. This is a series of annual reports that summarize major economic issues over the past year and discussing the economic outlook for the coming year. Vietnam Economic Annual Report is the main product of VNU's strategic research program on "Macroeconomic Theory and Policy in Vietnam's Economic Integration."

The report is a useful reference material for managers, policymakers, researchers and for all those who are interested in macroeconomic issues in Vietnam. Its data is updated until the end of December 2016 with some current issues being updated until the first quarter of 2017. The full report is expected to be published in September 2017. The English version is expected to be published in December 2017.
