At the conference summarizing and awarding VNU student scientific research on 26th November 2015, the research project of student Hoang Minh Tri of the VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB) was granted third prize in the field of Social Science and Humanities.

In 2015, there were 1,552 research projects submitted at all members of the VNU. From scientific research conference at university level, VNU members had chosen 41 projects to submit at the VNU level.

At the conference, there were 4 councils working on the key research areas of the VNU, including: Social science and Humanities, Natural Sciences - Medical and Pharmaceutical, Science Technology and Engineering, and Interdisciplinary Science.

In the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, representatives from the UEB won the third prize with the study "Estimating the deviation of the real effective exchange rate of the period 2000-2014 in Vietnam: The approach from the effect equilibrium exchange rate model" conducted by student Hoang Minh Tri (QH-2011-E KTQT) under instruction of Dr. Nguyen Cam Nhung.

The paper was conducted to estimate the equilibrium effective exchange rate in long term and calculate misalignment in the real effective exchange rate (REER) by using cointegration model. Accordingly, as of the 4th quarter 2014, Vietnamese Dong was overvalued by 16.85%. Besides, by using the vector autoregressive model (VAR) with one-quarter lag, the paper showed the important factors to explain the misalignment of the real exchange rate. Particularly, money supply (M2) is a factor which has a relatively high level of interpretation. On the other hand, the state can adjust the M2 more easily than remaining macroeconomic factors. By calculating the impulse response functions (IRFs) and the pass-through coefficient, this paper proposed some solutions to reduce the level of the real exchange rate misalignment. And one of the most important solutions is the State Bank of Vietnam should increase the scale of the money supply by more 6,12% to make the real exchange rate return to the equilibrium exchange rate in the long run.

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc - Vice President of the VNU, Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector of the UEB, Assoc.Prof. Dr. Vu Van Tich - Director of Science and Technology Department, VNU took a shot with student Hoang Minh Tri

Previously, the paper of Hoang Minh Tri had won the second prize at the student scientific research conference of the UEB in the schoolyear of 2014 - 2015. This achievement has made great contribution to development of research activities of the students in particular and the UEB in general.
