Inauguration ceremony of Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research, VNU-UEB

On 17th November, 2014, at Pullman Hotel, 40 Cat Linh, Hanoi, Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), formerly known as Vietnam Centre for Economic and Policy Research under the VNU University of Economics and Business, solemnly held the inauguration ceremony.


To be present at the inauguration ceremony, there were representatives of the Office of President, Commission for Foreign Relations of the Party Central Committee, Central Committee’s Economic Commission, the State Bank of Vietnam, General Department 5 of the Ministry of Public Security; representatives of Embassies, international organizations located in Vietnam, scientists, researchers at relevant universities, institutes, partner corporations and enterprises. From the side of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and VNU University of Economics and Business, there were Prof.Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang, Former Vice President, Chairman of Science and Training Council, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, UEB Rector; Vice Rectors; heads of UEB’s departments, faculties and offices together with VEPR’s staffs.

In the opening ceremony, the attractive and impressive music and piano session were performed by Pianist Trang Trinh and Opera Park Sung Min. Mr Canh Chi Dung, Head of Office of Human Resources, UEB read the decision on establishing VEPR and appointing Director. On behalf of the UEB Board of Management, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, UEB Rector handed over the two decisions to Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Director of VEPR, congratulated the Institute and expressed his expectation on the development of the Institute as well as the contributions to Vietnam’s economy.

On behalf of VEPR’s staff, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh delivered his speech at the ceremony to receive his new task and presented the establishment and development history as well as strategy, orientation and missions of VEPR in the upcoming time.

At the ceremony, Prof.Dr.Sc. Vu Minh Giang, Chairman of Science and Training Council, Vietnam National University, Hanoi congratulated VEPR and expressed his desire that economists will further do researches and contribute to the development of the country.

In the inauguration ceremony, distinguished partners and guests came to congratulate VEPR. Dr. Le Xuan Nghia, Member of the economics consulting Group of the Prime Minister shared his opinions: “I really admire the encouragement of Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh and his colleagues for being dared to establish Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research, currently named as Vietnam Institute for Economics and Policy Research when the country has faced with many difficulties…”
Though the path ahead is still in difficulty, he hoped that VEPR’s Director as well as his staff will together develop VEPR. Mr Andrew Shepherd, First Secretary of Australian Embassy, representatives of partners also congratulated VEPR and expressed their desire of long term cooperation with Vietnam, including VEPR.

The inauguration ceremony came to an end in the exciting and enthusiastic atmosphere, opening a new path with various opportunities. Hopefully, Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research, VNU University of Economics and Business will develop strongly, spread not only in Vietnam but also in the region and over the world.

Vietnam Center for Economics and Policy Research - VEPR, directly under the VNU University of Economics and Business, was established in July 2008.

On 26th August, 2014, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, VNU-UEB Rector signed the Decision No. 3398/ QĐ-ĐHKT on the establishment of Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research which was upgraded from Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research under the VNU-UEB.
