It is really a special and remarkable summer at the Faculty of Finance and Banking, VNU University of Economics and Business as lecturers and students are honored to welcome Prof. Richard D. Beason, Director of International Center at Alberta University, Canada. Prof. Richard D. Beason now becomes a long term visiting scholar at the invitation from Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu who is the Dean of the Faculty of Finance and Banking as well as the leader of Strong research team at VNU University of Economics and Business after his short term program with the faculty in January this year. By this cooperation, the Faculty of Finance and Banking has become the pioneer in inviting an international professor for teaching and researching for long time period, following the encouragement VNU University of Economics and Business.

Prof. Richard D. Beason is known as reputed researcher in banking management with an impressive number of publications in high ranking journals. With 10 years of research experience in Japan, he is now an expert of banking and finance system in Asia. Prof. Richard D. Beason has strong interest in ownership structures, banking governance, banking performance and efficiency assessment. He has been a visiting scholar at Institute for Monetary and Economic studies, Bank of Japan, Foundation for Advanced information research (FAIR, Japan), Institute for Monetary and Fiscal policy research, Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan. As corporate governance in banking sector is a field that the Strong research team of VNU University of Economics and Business is now focusing, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu, the leader of the team has made efforts to invite Prof. Richard D. Beason for cooperation with the team. Her attempt was worthy as Prof. Richard D. Beason has showed his willing to be the long term visiting scholar in researching and giving lectures at the High quality programs running by the Faculty of Finance and Banking in the period of 1 year.
Prof. Richard D. Beason has made his wonderful start of the long term cooperation program by attending as a trainer at 02 training courses organized by the Faculty of Finance and Banking and International Finance Corporation (IFC) on “Intensive Training Course For Bank Managers” focusing on Building an effective banking governance and Creating control and risk management system for bank managers from 29 to 30/5/2018. These two courses were designed for managers of commercial banks as well as managers of State bank in Vietnam. The training courses have created a great opportunity for Prof. Richard to present his research findings about the relationship between ownership structure and banking management in Japan. He also stated the problems in banking governance that Asian countries have to overcome in their banking development. He emphasized that the success and failures of banking management system in Japan could bring significant lessons for developing countries like Vietnam.

On the next day at the Faculty of Finance and Banking, Prof. Richard D. Beason had attended at the seminar for PhD candidates Nguyen Tuan Anh and Nguyen Thi Hai Yen. Seminar is an required activity by the Faculty for the PhD candidates as a chance to receive supports from the lecturers to improve students’ researches. Prof. Richard had pointed the strengths and weaknesses in the researches taken by those two students and was happy to share his experience in conducting researches in banking and finance management.

The cooperation program between Prof. Richard D. Beason and the Faculty of Finance and Banking originated from the introduction of an VNU University of Economics and Business alumni who has strong understanding about the endless passion of Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu in research activities on banking governance and her willing to foster the international environment in the Faculty of Finance and Banking.
In these first days of the cooperation program, Prof. Richard D. Beason expresses his satisfaction with lecturers and students at the Faculty of Finance and Banking regarding their supports in visa procedures, accommodation and other personal issues. As stated by Prof. Richard D. Beason, he is really impressed with the enthusiasm and excellence of lecturers as well as the English proficiency and distinction of students at the Faculty of Finance and Banking. Both Prof. Richard D. Beason and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu have strong believe that this long term cooperation program will not only improve the High quality programs but also foster the research activities in the faculty.
