Distribution of income in a market economy is an important phase in the process of reproduction in a society. Income distribution is both a purpose and a motivation for economic development and maintaining social fairness.

Since beginning economic reform in 1986, Vietnam has attained impressive economic and social achievements. After more than twenty years of reform, economic development of Vietnam is regarded as rapid with an annual increasing rate from 8.5% to 9%. Economic advancement has become an important element in achieving some social targets such as improving living quality, creating jobs and eliminating poverty… However, along with the economic achievements, the disparity in wealth between regions and social groups are increasing, some low skill labour workers loose their jobs due to the international integration of the economy. Maintaining development of the economy together with the fairness in income distribution in order to achieve social targets has been and is an issue with the Vietnamese economy at the moment.

Carrying out research to improve policies for income distribution to attain social milestones but at the same time avoiding eliminating the incentives for developing the economy are necessary, both theoretically and practically.

Result obtained: Showing clearly the current status of the income distribution policies and their effects on the living standard, wealth and other issues in the Vietnamese society today. Analyzing the achievements and shortcomings of the current income distribution policies. Making some proposals to improve the income distribution policies in Vietnam.
