Meiji Restoration - 150 Years of Reflection

This book examines the Meiji Restoration through the lens of Vietnam, drawing on the lessons acquired during the present reform, which are both timely and beneficial. Vietnam's present reform initiatives are expected to be more effective, enabling the country to make exceptional development strides in the not-too-distant future.

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan (September 21, 1973 September 21, 2018), as well as the 150th anniversary of Japan's Meiji reform; and on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Government's promulgation of the Decree on Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), VNU University of Economics and Business collaborated with the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Vietnam Japan University and Waseda University, Japan to organize the international conference “150 years of Meiji Restoration: Vietnam’s Perspectives” in Hanoi on November 22, 2018.

The book is the outcome of the symposium sponsored by the Japan Foundation and the Asian Research Centre (ARC). The exchange, discussion, and dissemination of lessons learned from the Meiji Restoration by Vietnamese and Japanese scientists not only benefits academic exchanges, but also helps the younger generation and citizens of both countries gain a better understanding of the premise and significance of this revolution for Japan's socioeconomic development, therefore contributing to the consolidation and promotion of Vietnam - Japan relations.

At the micro level, this book demonstrates the cohesion of research and academic exchange between three VNU member universities included: VNU University of Economics and Business, VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and VNU Vietnam Japan University, with other Japan universities such as Waseda University as well as with Japanese enterprises and research institutes.
