How "Ranking" affects the student choice and university selection

In countries with advanced education system, the "ranking" of a university has huge impact on student choice and university selection. In fact, each international ranking has a set of assessment criteria based on many different aspects. Let's look at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and VNU University of Economics and Business through the prestigious world rankings of 2021.


VNU's Business and Management studies being ranked in the group 501 - 550 by QS World University Rankings

 

QS World University Rankings is an annual ranking released since 2004 by the Quacquarelli Symonds Education Organization, UK. This is one of the most prestigious and influential rankings in the world.

QS Ranking (built on 4 criteria, including: Academic Reputation; Employer Reputation; Average citations per article (Citations per paper); The H-index measures the productivity and impact of academic publications by faculty members.

 

Vietnam National University, Hanoi is the first and only education institution in Vietnam with the business and management field being ranked in the group 501-550 by QS in 2021. The criteria of the average citation per article and the H-index of this field are highly appreciated (61.6 and 65.1 respectively). Among the members of VNU, the UEB has contributed greatly this achievement. VNU University of Economics and Business with a team of high qualified lecturers; is the organizer of many large scale international conferences such as the YSI Asian Convening 2019, Asian Student Forum (GPAC), Springer International Conference etc.

Top university in Vietnam by Times Higher Education University Rankings

Published annually by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, THE ranking is globally recognized. In 2021, Vietnam National University, Hanoi was ranked first in Vietnam, in the group of 251-300 globally. This ranking is based on 13 criteria with adjustment to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies such as: teaching (weighs 30%), research (weighs 30%), scientific citations (weighs 20%), internationalization (weighs 10%), and knowledge transfer (weighs 10%).

 

It is noteworthy that the academic prestige of the institution was objectively assessed by THE, based on the scholars' votes in the published author system of the Scopus database, selected by THE. In 2021, VNU increased scores in all 5 criteria, of which research increased by 8.8%, followed by scientific citations of 8%.
