Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP)

For mid-career professionals from one of the 60 selected countries, following NFP approved short courses or master’s programmes, or a PhD programme.


For whom?

  • Applicants are mid-career professionals with at least three years work experience.

  • Applicants are nationals of one of the following countries.

  • Applicants have been unconditionally admitted to courses and programmes recognised by the NFP (short course or master’s programme) or to a PhD programme.

  • Applicants are nominated by their employers. Applications without a support letter from an employer will not be considered.

Scholarship period

Minimum 2 weeks for a short course, maximum 4 years for a PhD programme.

General requirements and application date

Deadlines may vary, therefore please consult the Netherlands Embassy, Consulate or local Nuffic Neso office in your country well in advance for specific instructions. Enquiries and information about local procedures, deadlines, requirements and selection criteria should also be directed to the embassy, consulate or Neso office. Local procedures may differ from the general information provided on Nuffic’s website or in brochures.

Application fee

If you are applying for an NFP scholarship for a short course or a master’s programme you are not required to pay the €100 application fee. However, we must receive evidence that you are intending to apply for the NFP scholarship, in the form of a letter from your employer, endorsing your study plans and guaranteeing that while you are absent your salary will continue to be paid and your job will be held. This is the same letter that you will require for your actual NFP application

  • Please ensure that you have submitted a complete application by the relevant deadline mentioned in the table above.

  • If you apply to Leiden University after our application deadline you may still indicate that you are applying for an NFP scholarship. However Leiden University cannot guarantee that your file will be reviewed in time to meet the deadline for application via SOL (the Nuffic’s online scholarship application tool).

  • Admission to a course or programme must be unconditional. You are not eligible for the scholarship if you are admitted on condition of (re)taking an exam, undertaking a pre-sessional English courses or submitting an English test or other diplomas or certificates.
