2011 Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program (UIELSP)

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) is currently seeking candidates for the 2011 Undergraduate Intensive English language Study Program.


First through third year undergraduate students (or fourth year students in five-year programs) who demonstrate leadership through academic work and community involvement and have a good knowledge of English are invited to apply for the program. Up to six scholarships are available for Vietnamese students. The application deadline is 5:00 PM, Monday, December 20, 2010.

Program Overview

The Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program will enroll 120 undergraduate students around e world who demonstrate the potential to become student leaders, in eight-week intensive English Language courses at colleges and universities in the United States, starting in June 2011. The Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program will provide participants with intensive English language training, with a focus on English language acquisition, leadership skill building, and civic education and engagement. The primary focus of the program is intensive English language coursework, but programs

so include components on leadership training and participating in community service and volunteerism that is focused on issues such as public health and wellness or environmental conservation and sustainability.

Participants will develop a plan to implement an outreach project upon their return home that is based on specific needs of their communities. Throughout the program participants will attend a number of cultural events and excursions and have opportunities to interact with American citizens. All participant costs, including program administration, international and domestic travel and ground transportation, books, cultural, mailing and incidental allowances, housing and subsistence will be paid by the U.S. Department of State.

Candidate Qualifications

Selection will be based on the potential of the candidates to become student leaders through academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities, without regard to their field of study, race, religion, or gender. Competition is open to all applicants who meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Vietnam

  • Are typically 25 years of age or younger

  • Are committed to returning to their home universities following completion of their program;

  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university and community activities; 

  • Have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated in grades, awards, and teacher recommendations;

  • Have TOEFL test results of approximately 450-480 (paper-based) or 45-55 (iBT);

  • Have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country;

1. Completed, signed Undergraduate Intensive English Language Study Program application form (including two essays)

2. Two letters of recommendation from teachers/professors

3. Official transcripts for years of university study (with notarized English translations if in Vietnamese).

4. First year student must submit Certificate of high school graduation and official transcripts for years of

high school study (with notarized English translation if in Vietnamese)

5. TOEFL’s or iBT TOEFL’s score report (if any)
