Discussion on modern economic and management theories

VNU-UEB Vice Rector Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh chairs the workshop
The workshop entitled “Modern Economic and Management Theories: Policy Implications for Vietnam” was held by VNU University of Economics and Business on July 2, 2013.


The workshop aimed to raise the awareness and ability to apply modern economic and management theories in Vietnam as our country is facing with many challenges caused by economic crisis, demanding appropriate economic structure and modern economic theories in Vietnam nowadays to be reviewed, updated and researched.
The workshop attracted Vietnamese leading economic experts, policy makers with expertise in economic policy and management, researchers working for economics universities, representatives of agencies and research institutes, as well as students, and graduates who are interested in the issue.
In the first section, the presentations focused on the topic “Modern Economic and Management: Policy Implications for Vietnam”. Presentation by Ass.Pro.Dr. Le Cao Doan provided a comprehensive introduction to the modern economic theories and their significance to deal with Vietnam’s economic problems. Dr. Pham Thi Hong Diep, lecturer of VNU University of Economics and Business, discussed the studies on theories of the welfare state, including analysis on the formation and development of theories of the welfare systems, welfare state and welfare state patterns in the world. Assessment of the advantages and limitations of these theories suggest some points to build social welfare system for Vietnam nowadays. Institutional economics and Williamson’s contribution to the modern institutional economics are discussed in the presentation by Dr. Dinh Tuan Minh.
The second section focused on the topic “Modern management models to improve efficiency of busisses, production, economic restructuring, corporate restructuring and organizations in public administration”. Presentations by Dr. Tran Kim Chung and Dr. Nguyen Truc Le discussed some relatively new issues. Dr. Tran Kim Chung presented the studies of modern theories of economic structures, the differences between modern and classic theories of economics structures. Realizing that this doctrine is relevant to Vietnam’s situation, the study suggested several policy implications for Vietnam nowadays. Presentation by Dr. Nguyen Truc Le discussed the application of the Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) solution so as to restructure the management of institutions in Vietnam.
The participants, such as Pro.Dr Nguyen Quang Thai, Assoc.Pro.Dr Vo Dai Luoc, Assoc.Pro.Dr. Do Duc Dinh, Dr. Nguyen Minh Phong, Dr.Nguyen Duc Thanh, Dr. Le Quoc Phuong, and Dr. Nguyen Dang Minh, appreciated the workshop’s topic in context of economic crisis. The experts expressed their joy as young researchers are interested in such an academic topic. They agreed that the VNU University of Economics and Business, with the orientation to become a research university, should continue organizing further workshops on this topic and specialized and in-depth workshops following this one.

Assoc.Pro. Pham Van Dung, Dean of the Faculty of Political Economics which specializes in macro economic issues, thanked the contribution, advice and supports from the experts and researchers. Assoc.Pro.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Vice Rector of VNU University of Economics and Business,  summed up the workshop and thanked the participants for their contribution to the workshop to be successful. Mr. Thanh also expressed hope that the school will continue receiving such valuable contribution in the following workshops.
