Seminar on economics & policy research No.4

In the afternoon of 26th October 2012, Vietnam Center for Economics and Policy Research (VEPR) organized the Seminar on Economic and Policy Research titled "International experiences in overcoming bad debt management of the commercial banking system (especially after the decline period of the property market) and policy implications for Vietnam".


This is the 4th in the series of Seminars on Economic and Policy Research held periodically by VEPR. The presentor was MSc. Nguyen Mai Thanh, Deputy Head of Research and International Affairs Department, Deposit Insurance of Vietnam (DIV).
Experts participated in the seminar including Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Dr. Pham Sy Thanh from VEPR and Dr. Le Kim Sa from VASS. Many researchers and students from other institutions and universities also attended.
To open the Seminar, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh gave a brief introduction about the presentor and the purpose of Seminar. MSc. Mai Thanh received a Master of Development Economics degree from the Vietnam-Netherlands Master Program. The main research fields of MSc. Nguyen Mai Thanh include Methods of Banking Supervision, Risk Management and Restructuring of the Banking System.
The study began with general theories on bad debt. Then, it summarized international experiences to deal with bad debt after some crises such as the Asian financial crisis (1997-1998), monetary crises in Latin America (Chile, 1981; Mexico, 1994; Argentina, 2001; etc.) and the current global financial crisis. On that basis, the paper evaluated the bad debt situation in Vietnamese banks and the Government’s measures in association with the current restructuring process of the commercial banking system. Finally, the paper brought several recommendations based on internatioanl experiences to deal with bad debt problems of Vietnamese commercial banks.
After listening to the presentation, the experts, researchers and students raised many questions and gave valuable comments in order to help the author to complete the study.
