Vietnam Center for Economic and Policy Research defended Project of 2010: Vietnam Economic Annual Report

On 17th August 2009, at the UEB - VNU, on behalf of the research team, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh - Director of Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) presented Project of 2010: Vietnamese Economic Annual report in the presence of the VNU’s Scientific Council presided by Prof.Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang - Vice President of the VNU.


Challengers from the Scientific Council were Dr. Le Dang Doanh (Institute of Development Research), Dr. Vo Tri Thanh (Central Institute for Economic Management), commissioners of the Council including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Son - Rector of the UEB, Assoc. Prof. Dr Pham Hong Tung - Vice Chief of R&D Department and Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet - Head of Scientific Research & Cooperation Development Department of the UEB - VNU.

In his presentation, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh affirmed the differences between the Report from other annual reports, and reviewed the success of the 2009 report: “Vietnam economy in 2008: declines and challenges for renovation”, also he presented the schedule of contents, group of authors and plans for the Report of 2010.

In general, the Council agreed on the deployment of the Report of the VEPR, UEB - VNU. According to Dr. Le Dang Doanh, the three important characteristics of the Report had to be independent, scientific and systematic. He advocated that the Report needed to be well financially supported in order to maintain its continuity. Dr. Le Dang Doanh also contributed his ideas to the content of each chapter to help the author group improve the report next year. Besides, he suggested that it was necessary to publish the Report in both English and Vietnamese.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Son and Prof. Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang maintained that this report expressed its independent voice of an academic research work under sponsorship of a university. Prof. Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang gained the author group’s attention to increase the applicability features of the report in addition to its academic coherence.

Although Dr. Vo Tri Thanh did not physically attend the conference, he sent his ideas to the Council. He highly appreciated the ideas of preparing a Vietnam Economy Annual Report by the CEPR - UEB and agreed with the structure of the report. He contributed his ideas in details to enrich the report contents.

In agreement with Dr. Le Dang Doanh, all commissioners agreed that the Report should also be published in English so that international organizations and foreign governmental agencies can use it for reference.

Prof.Dr.Sc Vu Minh Giang concluded the conference by endorsing his absolute support for the CEPR, VNU in its sponsoring the project of preparing the Vietnam Economic Annual Report, as well as acknowledging it as a great achievement of the research group.
