International Workshop: Green University Model - International Experience and Policy Recommendations for Vietnam

On May 11th 2017, the Center for Economic Development Studies (CEDS) under VNU University of Economics and Business held an international workshop on "Green University Model - International Experience and Policy Recommendations for Vietnam".


This workshop is within the framework of the VNU project QG.15.66 on "Research on green university model: international experience and recommendations for Vietnam National University, Hanoi".

The project is conducted to develop a green university model from practical experiences and to propose a solution for applying this model in VNU. It is headed by Dr. Pham Vu Thang - Director of the CEDS since November 2015. The workshop on "Green University Model - International Experience and Policy Recommendations for Vietnam" was held with the aim of reporting research results and receiving opinions from researchers, policy-makers and representatives of relevant parties on the development of green university in Vietnam.

The workshop was attended by two international speakers - Prof. Yun Sun Jin - Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies and Prof. Hong Jong Ho - Director of Environmental Planning Institute from National University of Seoul, Korea; representatives of Ministry of Planning and Investment - Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hien - Deputy Head of Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment Foreign Investment; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai - Vice President of VNU; leaders of the member universities of VNU - Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector of VNU University of Economics and Business, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha - Rector of VNU University of Engineering and Technology, together with experts from universities in Hanoi.

 

Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu introduces UEB’s activities related to green growth

At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu presented to the participants about the UEB’s activities related to green growth, including the green growth project undertaken by the UEB and UNDP, strong research groups and projects on green models etc. In her talk, she emphasized the role of universities in raising public awareness about green models.

 

Prof. Yun Sun Jin presents the experiences of implementing the sustainable campus project at Seoul National University

At the workshop, Prof. Yun Sun Jin and Prof. Hong Jong Ho presented the experiences on sustainable campus project and green leadership education and certificate program at Seoul National University. After that, Dr. Pham Vu Thang on behalf of UEB’s research team presented the results obtained from the analysis of green university models in Germany and England. The research team then analyzed the status of applying green university model in the member universities of VNU. The analysis includes an assessment of the "green" levels, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges of each university when applying the green university model.
After listening to presentations on international experience and evaluation results at VNU, participants discussed policy recommendations for Vietnam in applying this model. Recommendations are made from multidimensional perspectives, including macro-level policy recommendations nationwide and micro-level policy recommendations for universities.

The workshop opened opportunities for action plan of green university model in Vietnam. Ending the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu expressed her thanks for the comments of the experts and expressed the wish to successfully implement the green university model in the future.
