UEB successfully held the World Finance & Banking Symposium 2015

In two days 17 and 18th December 2015, the VNU University of Economics and Business successfully held the World Finance & Banking Symposium, Hanoi 2015 (WFBS).



This year, the symposium attracted interest from numerous scholars, researchers and leading experts in the field of finance and banking over the world with more than 400 papers submitted. The papers of high quality were reviewed, evaluated and carefully selected. Accordingly, nearly 140 papers were selected to present at 42 parallel sessions of the symposium. Besides the parallel session, two main sessions were chaired by famous scholars in the financial sector: Prof. Henrik Cronqvist, University of Miami, USA and Prof. Utpal Bhattacharya, University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

The parallel sessions focused on various topics, such as: Corporate finance; Structure and cost of capital; Financial institutions and banking; Mergers and acquisitions; Asset pricing; International finance; Efficiency, segmentation and market integration; Risk management; International investment portfolio; Foreign currency and exchange rates; Collection management, monitoring and financial reporting; Portfolio management and assessment of effectiveness; Bond valuation; Foreign direct investment; Small business finance; Dividend and payment policy etc.


Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu (UEB) presented a study on "The Impact of Rural Household's credit access to sustainable poverty reduction in Vietnam"

Highlighted sessions of the symposium may be mentioned, such as: Session 6 with three presentations concerning market volatility after the crisis of 2007-2009, presented by speakers: James Bicksler (Rutgers University, USA), Zan Jan Oplotnik (University of Maribor, Slovenia), Katrin Gottschalk (Technology University of Auckland, New Zealand).


During session 10, three presentations on currency markets and exchange rates were presented. In the presentation of “Internationalization of RMB”, Dr. Gunter Dufey (University of Michigan and NTU/NBS Singapore) analyzed some concepts related to currency internationalization as well as reviewed some cases of currency internationalization in the past. Later, in the second presentation of “Pricing Risks across Currency Denominations”, speaker To Duong Thuy (University of New South Wales, Australia) assessed the risk on the foreign exchange market in different countries, which stated that investors based in different countries earn different returns on same strategies because the same risks can vary differently with countries' stochastic discount factors. The third presentation on “Factors of the Term Structure of Sovereign Yield Spreads” presented by speaker Stefan Truck (Macquarie University, Australia) investigated the term structure of sovereign yield spreads for five advanced economies against the US and provide novel insights on the key drivers of the term structure.

Experts exchanges on the sidelines of the symposium to exchange

On the sidelines of the academic activities, scholars and experts also took part in the city tour, enjoying Vietnamese cuisine and culture during the Gala Dinner. This is a good opportunity for international scholars to have a broader view of Vietnam, as well as exchange, discuss and expand the network of scholars and experts. This is also an opportunity for lecturers and staff of the VNU University of Economics and Business to cooperate and exchange and learn from international scholars and experts. Moreover, the symposium also promotes the image of the UEB in particular and Vietnam National University, Hanoi in general to international scholars and experts.
