2014 session of the UEB’s Science and Training Council

On 14th October 2014, a meeting of Science and Training Council at VNU University of Economics and Business was chaired by Assoc.Prof.Dr Nguyen Hong Son - UEB Rector cum Council Chairman.


Opening the meeting session, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son delivered his opening speech and stressed the importance of the meeting session and desired members of Council to share ideas and contributions, focusing on 2 main themes: (1) development strategic framework of UEB, period 2015 - 2020 and vision 2030; (2) some issues on scientific and training research of UEB.

At the meeting, Assoc.Prof.Dr Tran Anh Tai - Vice Rector of UEB presented the final report on scientific and training activities of the 2013-2014 academic year and the mission plan of the academic year 2014-2015. The report highlighted outstanding achievements on many activities of the previous academic year, the shortcomings and their causes and solutions. Afterward, Dr. Nguyen Truc Le - Vice Rector of UEB presented the development strategic framework, period 2015 - 2020 and vision to 2030 of UEB, stressed some notable issues such as mission, vision, strategic target, training activities, cooperation and  partnership network development.
Next, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet - Associate Dean, Faculty of Development Economics had a presentation on the pilot training program of Master in Maritime Economics. The training program is quite new in Vietnam and designed based on advanced training programs on Policy of Maritime Economics (Washington University, US) and Maritime Resource Economics (Pothmourt University). The master program will provide students with academic environment and training activities to formulate and develop personality, morality, knowledge, basic and necessary skills to achieve their future success in the field of maritime economics, meet the demands for the economic development of the country.
The Council has discussed and provided important feedbacks on the above issues. Assoc.Prof.Dr.Sc Vo Dai Luoc - General Director of Vietnam Asia-Pacific Economic Centerhighly appreciated the results of science and training in the last academic year, as well as the patience in research-oriented development. However, he said that to acquire more achievements in research and training activities, it is necessary to connect excellent people in and outside the country, towards international integration, attract not only international students but also scholars to attend research activities of UEB. Giving feedbacks on the implementation of the pilot training program of Master in Maritime Economics, he said UEB must conduct surveys on the practical demands at local authorities, aquaculture and seafood processing companies to identify the needs of learners; then find out strategic orientations to develop appropriate training programs and curriculum…
Agree with the opinions of Assoc.Prof.Dr.Sc Vo Dai Luoc, Dr. Dinh Quang Ty - Central Theoretical Council also gave some new recommendations such as frequentlyintegrate training and research activities, maintain the connections among strong research groups, students and lecturers based on specific branches and majors and especially maintain the engagement of training activities between UEB and ministries, local authorities and international organization.
Giving comments on the pilot training program of Master in Maritime Economics, Assoc.Prof.Dr.Sc Truong Quang Hoc (Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies – VNU) said that the pilot training program of Master in Maritime Economics is new and specially necessary; therefore, the international experiences and Vietnam’s current situations must be clearly understood to develop appropriate training program. Furthermore, he also raised a question on the name ofthis pilot master program, itmight be called Master in Maritime Economics or Master in Economics for Natural Resources and Maritime Environment.
Besides, there are many other comments made at the meeting including selection of appropriate subjects for entrance graduate exams of UEB, standards of outcomes for the pilot training program of Master in Maritime Economics, some criteria added todirect entry students from gifted schools into UEB; create an international standard environment, towards international integration and attract talents… Particularly, it is suggested that UEB should compose their own regulations on selecting, employing and promoting talents as well as compensation and incentives for lecturers, staffs and even students of the University.

To summarize the meeting session, Assoc.Prof.DrNguyen Hong Son - Chairman of the Science and Training Council summed up the opinions, suggestions as well as the comments of the members, and said thank to the members of Council who attended and contributed valuable comments and suggestions to the University.Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Sonexpressed the hope to have the further cooperation of the council members to help UEB become a top research-based University nationwide and towards the international standards.
