The UEB attends UNDP’s international conference

On June 12nd 2014, a UEB research team led by Rector Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son have attended an international conference held by National Financial Supervisory Commission (NFSC) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The conference was on financial stability: identifying systematic risks and strengthening macro prudence.


Speakers at the conference were IMF senior permanent representative Mr. Sanjay Karla, Deputy Director General of Banking Supervision Agency Dr. Duong Quoc Tinh, Vice Chairnam of Central Institute of Economic Management Dr. Nguyen Kim Chung, Associate Dean of UEB’s Faculty of Finance - Banking Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu and Fullbright scholars Dr. Huynh The Du and Dr. Vu Thanh Tu Anh.
The conference also received the attendance of scientists, experts and policymakers in the field of finance and banking.

At the conference, on behalf of the UEB research team, Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Tu presented on Financial Soundness Indicators - FSIs, international experience and implications to Vietnam. The team was also first in Vietnam proposed the idea to studying the application of FSIs which initiated by the IMF.
The presentation was highly appreciated while most of the audiences said that according to international practice, financial soundness measures of banking system is necessary and urgent. Besides, an accurate assessment on the actual operation of national financial systems is crucial in monitoring macroe prudence and financial soundness of the whole system. However, some participants also concerned about the accessibility and publication of information and data of the finance - banking system in Vietnam, which is moderate at the moment.
In Vietnam, in the early stage deploying the assessment system of financial soundness, FSIs will have important significance especially for raising awareness of FSIs’ role in monitoring the financial soundness as well as strengthening the capacity of monitoring macro prudence in compared to the banking systems of the other countries and regions around the world.
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son said, in the future, the research team would collaborate with NFSC, Deposit Insurance of Vietnam, the State Bank of Vietnam and BIDV to study and develop a comprehensive assessment of financial system in Vietnam.
