Banking management restructuring in the economic reform context

The above entitled seminar held by the UEB’s Faculty of Finance and Banking (FFB) took place on May 14. Attending the conference were faculty members, graduates and students of the faculty as well as representatives of Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank).


In his opening speech, the FFB Associate Dean Dr. Le Trung Thanh stressed the importance of the seminar’s theme in the current context. The seminar was managed by the FFB faculty members, focusing on the changes in organizational management thinking, enhancing the supervision of banking system, improving the efficiency of risk management and proposing solutions. In addition, the seminar discussed about new approaches in credit risk management and foreign experience of credit developing in rural areas.
Addressing the seminar, Deputy Chairman of the Banking Department - VietinBank Human Resources Development and Training School Dr. Nguyen Duc Tu has shared about the experience of restructuring and risk management system in Vietinbank. What drew the audiences’ attention was the collabotion among the banking system, between the departments of headquarters and branch responsibilities as well as the smoothness when implementing action plan of risk management activities.
Under the aspect of macroeconomic management and restructuring of banking system, FFB faculty Dr. Dinh Xuan Cuong pointed out that the inspection in the banking activities is not adequate. At the same time, he also emphasized the advanced risk management according to international standards of Basel II to Basel III and the role of risk based banking supervision. The application of ARROW methods and learning from interntional experience is essential to enhance the performance of banking supervision, said the faculty member.

One of the high-appreciated contents was about new solution for operational risk management from the perspective of commercial banks. Suggesting that credit risk management based on banking risk rate is a new approach which facilitates commercial banks in lending, Dr. Nguyen Phu Ha has proposed a model of banking analysis and methodological framework for building a banking analyzing systems in Vietnam. This is also an important basis to support commercial banks with more methodology to build a set of risk assessment indicators, thereby developing a frame of interest for each customer group based on risk characteristics.

After three hours of lively discussion between the speakers and audiences, the seminare ended successfully. Summarizing the seminar, Dr. Le Trung Thanh encouraged the faculty members and students in research, hoping in further cooperation activities between the FFB and other agencies in the banking industry.
