Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2022: Enhancing the Digital Platform for the Service Industry

The book was compiled by a large number of scientists, researchers, and lecturers from research institutes and universities nationwide. The book is the result of the serious and dedicated work of the group of authors, as well as the contributions of consultants who have worked together for many years to make it a great success.

The world is unstable, the global economy in 2022 is lower than expected, but Vietnam's prospects in 2022 are quite positive. In 2021, the resurgence and prolongation of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on socio-economic aspects of Vietnam. Unresolved challenges in 2021 persist into 2022 such as an increase in energy prices, labor shortages, supply chain congestion along with macro risks such as inflation, interest rate increases and monetary tightening, stopping or withdrawing economic stimulus policies suddenly and without control, hindering the economic recovery process. Besides, the current stagnant inflation pressure is an alert for the global economy, especially developing and emerging countries. The Russia-Ukraine war also creates huge pressure on the global economy and worsens the energy crisis, hindering and derailing the economic recovery in 2022.

However, the economy still has optimistic signals. In 2022, the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic is forecast to gradually decrease, accordingly foreign investors continue to actively invest in Vietnam; Domestic enterprises are established and enterprises returning to operation increases. Along with overcoming challenges, the Government's policies to support production and business have promoted the economy to grow and develop in the best way. Vietnam is promoting economic restructuring associated with innovating the growth model based on innovation, and the need to develop the service industry is increasingly important. The sustainable development of the service industry, on the one hand, creates a direct driving force for economic growth, and on the other hand, creates a spillover impact on other sectors of the economy through providing high quality inputs and ensuring output for industrial and agricultural sectors. The year 2022 will be an important year in implementing the Socio-Economic Recovery and Development Program; At the same time, it creates a premise for a "breakthrough" to successfully implement the goals of the 5-year socio-economic development plan 2021-2025.
With the above contexts of the world and Vietnamese economies, the Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2022 selected the theme "Enhancing the digital platform for the service industry". The book affirms that the strong international integration trend requires the domestic market to promote close links with foreign markets through trade and services. Although the world is facing many challenges, recovery efforts along with the 4.0 Industrial Revolution are also taking place increasingly strongly. Globalization and the challenges of sustainable development trends promote comprehensive restructuring of the service industry to enhance Vietnam's competitive position in regional and international markets, as well as develop the service industry associated with implementing social and environmental goals. The traditional service industry develops mainly thanks to material advantages (for example, encouraging transportation, logistics, and tourism services based on convenient traffic locations, seaports, scenic spots, etc.). The modern service industry aims to strengthen the role of industries with high knowledge and technology content (such as finance, credit, education and training, health...); with high added value (such as information technology, model design, R&D and some business service sub-sectors). In other words, the sustainable development of the modern service industry depends largely on creation, knowledge sharing, integration and access to technology.

On that basis, the Vietnam Economic Annual Report 2022 focus on analyzing the development of the service industry in Vietnam to see the objective necessity of digital transformation of the economy and the services, thereby analyzing the digital transformation situation of two major service industries, finance, banking and logistics in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Annual Economic Report is a publication of the Institute of Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), affiliated with UEB. It has been continuously published and announced for many years. After each report, the group of authors diligently revise the report to make it a meaningful, continuous and updated reference, focusing on independent analysis. Objectively discuss achievements, difficulties, opportunities and challenges in the development process, contribute to providing a scientific basis for macroeconomic policy making, and selectively discuss a number large and specialized economic issues of Vietnam.

The book publishes research results, providing readers who are researchers, lecturers, graduate students, undergraduate students and post graduate students with worthy, reliable, in-depth discussions and information about the basic issues of the Vietnamese economy not only in 2022, but also the economic development process over the years. The book also provides specific policy proposals associated with evidence-based and comprehensive analysis, so the book is also a useful reference for managers, policymakers, and journalists as well as for anyone interested in current economic issues in Vietnam.
