We talk about VNU University of Economics and Business

VNU University of Economics and Business (UEB) is seen to be a dynamic university having a lot of breakthrough movements in boldly renovating head-hunting policies, improving education and research environment, enhancing teaching quality.

UEB Rector, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son has many times talked about the importance of reform in newspaper interviews. Let us have a look again at the outstanding young faces among UEB’s staff.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son

Reform process of education and research environment at UEB is critical important and has been implemented comprehensively thanks to the fact that the Management Board has clear vision of becoming a world class research university.
Besides providing the society with an increasing number of experts and high-qualified managers in economics, management and business administration, transferring more and more research outcomes for the Government, enterprises and organizations, UEB is going to create more favorable conditions to nourish and develop talents.

As a matter of fact, the UEB has attracted many young yet high-qualified lecturers during the past time. Number of doctor and associate professor lecturers is of high proportion among universities. Especially, when young and excellent doctors graduating from prestigious universities in the world join UEB’s team, they are immediately appointed high positions, holding important responsibilities of the university. In the near future, focus will be put on human resources management with appropriate policies and mechanisms to attract talents, nourish passion, encourage creativeness, professionalism, cooperation and self-improvement.
The UEB hopes to continuingly be an ideal destination of lecturers, scientists, managers and businessmen who are dedicated to quality and wholeheartedly willing to contribute to the development of UEB in particular and our country in general” - said Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Son.
Following are some feelings about academic and research environment at UEB shared by lecturers, doctors working at UEB:

Dr. Dang Duc Son, Head of Accounting division (former Associate Dean of Finance - Banking Faculty) is a typical young lecturer of the UEB. In 2007, Dr. Dang Duc Son graduated from Accounting major, Glamorgan general university, Wales, UK. Shortly afterwards, he selected the VNU-UEB as the destination for his career. In November 2008, he officially became lecturer of Finance - Banking Faculty and appointed to those positions.
When explaining reasons for choosing UEB to work, Dr. Dang Duc Son expresses that the education and research environment at UEB is largely similar to that of prestigious Glamorgan University of UK. He thinks the environment is highly professional, with realistic development strategy and vision. The academic and research environment at UEB is not only suitable for lecturers and students who pursue academic research orientation but also for lecturers and businessmen interested in business, economic counseling and management.

Dr. Phan Huu Thang: Former Director of Foreign Investment Department, now Director of Centre for Foreign Investment Study (CFIS), UEB. Dr. Phan Huu Thang is one of pioneer staff in reform process under direction to combine research and training with companies/organizations and reality.
CFIS of VNU UEB was established basing on a team of creative, dynamic researchers who were trained professionally and skillfully in advanced countries. The center is earnestly supported by a founding committee with a lot of expectations and ambitions of developing foreign investment in Vietnam as well as helping Vietnam’s entrepreneurs to grow in international investment. It is also backed up by an advisory panel composed of managers, leading investment experts, directors of local and international enterprises. The center has its collaborators throughout the country and some countries in the world.
With the facilitation of UEB’s Management Board, we are confident to provide investors and the community with in-depth reports of foreign investment and useful advices to improve investment efficiency in Vietnam.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Thu: As one of young and excellent lecturersof the UEB, Dr. Nguyen Anh Thugraduated from International Development major of Yokohama National University, Japan in 2009 and started work at UEB in the same year. She is currently Deputy Head of Economic Expertise and International Project Management division, Faculty of International Business and Economics (FIBE), UEB.
She has very close contact with students, providing a lot of support to them and frequently spends time giving advices on choosing the right job and practical experience in job interview. According to her information, surveys show that more than 80% of the FIBE students find their jobs in 3 months after graduation. Many alumni are very successful, only after 2 to 3 years, they hold high positions in major companies; many others start their own business and become managers when they are still very young. In her opinion, before choosing occupation, students should consider their hobbies, capabilities and make prioritization of their own criteria and objectives. It is known that not only leaders of FIBE but also UEB Management Board always facilitate students in career orientation activities.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh - Director of Vietnam Center for Economics and Policy Research, VNU - UEB, one of UEB’s outstanding young lecturers. Nguyen Duc Thanh defended successfully his dissertation in Development Economics at Japan National Policy Research Institute in 2008 and became lecturer of the university in the same year.
“UEB students’ potential in scientific research is huge”, said Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh. For students, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh is a lecturer who is dedicated to the scientific research of students. With profound expertise and humorous and optimistic attitude, Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh has inspired generations of students and aroused their passion in scientific exploration and resolution of practical issues. Together with his colleagues at VEPR, he has founded Students’ Policy Economics research awards. This is to encourage economic researches for all students who are passionate about researching in all economic university throughout Vietnam. After 2 years, the award has been attracted many quality studies from students of economic universities in Hanoi such as VNU University of Economics and Business, National Economic University, Foreign Trade University, Vietnam University of Commerce, Academy of Finance...

Dr. Vu Pham Hai Dang: studied in New York University (America) and was conferred Doctor in Macroeconomics/ Labour (2008), assistant lecturer at New York University. Coming back to Vietnam in 2009, he became a lecturer of Faculty of Development Economics, VNU-UEB. Though being quite young, he has special passion in teaching as well as researching. Many students of the UEB share: Dr. Vu Pham Hai Dang is a dedicated lecturer, with modern teaching methodology that encourages students’ creativeness, discussions and brainstorming. The lecturer also expresses that working at VNU-UEB is a good chance and honour for him. Besides good working environment that encourages and facilitates lecturers to develop their individual qualifications, daily interactions with smart, confident and dynamic students also give him happiness and more motivation with the job.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang: having been conferred Doctor degree in Microeconomics and Finance at New York University (2008), she became Faculty Development Economics lecturer at VNU-UEB since 2009 and Deputy Director of Vietnam Center Economics and Policy Research, UEB since 2010.
She said: “Although I am a young female teacher, right from the first days at VNU-UEB, I am very satisfied because there is equality and solidarity here, and everybody work for a common target... Position and promotion of each individual depends solely on their qualifications and efforts, not seniority, relationships or other factors. Regular subjective evaluation mechanism urges lecturers to make every effort to achieve teaching and research objectives at the best quality”.

Dr. Pham Thi Lien: Associate Dean of Faculty of Business Administration cum Head of Marketing Division - VNU UEB is one of young lecturers but she has experience working in large companies and corporations. Before graduating as Business Administration Doctor from Macquarie School of BA, Macquarie University, Sydney (Australia), she had worked in Bao Viet Finance Corporation (Market research leader), Management Counselor and Chief Evaluation Expert, APAVE Vietnam and South East Asia.
She always bears in mind that teaching and research activities at university need to stick with practical conditions and enterprises’ demand. Activities to develop relationships, build strategic partnerships with local and foreign enterprises need strengthening, in which the university is the provider of intelligence and high quality human resources for enterprises, while enterprises are supposed to make orders and investment for those activities. UEB has built strategic partnership in the same approach, typically friendly partnership with Gami corporation, Vietnam shipbuilding industry group VINASHIN, Petrovietnam, EMG Education, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group VNPT, An Binh Commercial Joint Stock Bank, Vietnam Investment Review, Saigon Securities Inc,.... Thanks to that, UEB students are receiving more and more interesting and practical opportunities for apprentice, short term training courses and occupation from these partners.
Dr. Vu Anh Dzung - Dean of Faculty of International Business and Economics, VNU-UEB

Dr. Vu Anh Dzung started working at UEB in 2009 as Associate Dean of FIBE.  In 2010, he was appointed the position of Dean of the faculty and became the youngest dean of the VNU-UEB.
Graduating doctorate degree from Cambridge University (UK), he held high management positions in large companies such as Marketing manager of UTStarcom Telecommunications (America), Chief of Marketing division of S-Telecom Hanoi, Brand manager of Heineken and Tiger Beer in Asia Pacific Beer Company in Hanoi... As a research student in UK, he joined the working group providing consultation for some multinational groups such as Diageo, SABMiller, GSK, Ford UK...
Shortly after becoming a member of UEB, he led the study on scientific and practical basis as well as the process of developing training program in CDIO approach to apply in UEB’s honor program in International Economics. CDIO is a new initiative in education, a set of methods and manners of stimulating knowledge, skills in training students to meet the social and enterprises’ requirements. Originated from MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology (America), the network of universities applying CDIO throughout the world has been increasing up to now, especially in America.
Dr. Dzung says: UEB’s environment is a good destination that encourages development of each member, especially young teachers who have great expectations and aspiration. This urges lecturers to continuously contribute their intellects into UEB’s growth. Also in December 2010, FIBE has had its International Business bachelor program, high quality intake verified in accordance with quality assurance standards of AEAN University Network (AUN-QA); results showed that the program qualified international standard verification.
Always staying close to students and facilitating their efforts in studying and scientific research, he deployed students’ role in learning and extra class activities or contributing ideas and efforts to develop their faculty and university. It has been clearly illustrated in the verification of International Business program’s quality by AUN-QA when international verification experts said: students of Economics and International Business faculty in particular and VNU-UEB in general are equipped with both knowledge and skills, they are confident, creative and proactive in career orientation and future planning.
